Micro-Lens Arrays make plain LED shine in Automotive Lighting

Lighting plays an important role in automobiles. It helps with illumination and adds to the overall aesthetic of the car. In the past, halogens and HIDs were commonly used light source in cars. The recent shift in focus for tail lamps to uniform, homogeneous surface illumination is not well suited to Halogen and HIDs. LEDs are now quickly replacing these light sources. Optical methods required to spread and diffuse the LED point sources that are currently used today adds depth, reduces energy efficiency, and blurs individual segments of the tail lamps into indistinct fuzzy zones. However, they often still fail to produce a truly uniform and homogeneous surface light. LEDs offer bright, efficient, and long lasting light, but controlling the light is not straightforward.

BrightView’s Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology diffuses and controls the spread of LED light, allowing engineers to modify the point source of light (Lambertian source) into different shapes and patterns while diffusing at the same time. Unlike many other diffusing options, MLAs do not rely on a diffusing agent to homogenize the LED, but instead use microstructures which act as lenses to manage light. They can effectively hide LED hotspots that can be seen in traditional taillights and other automobile lighting systems.

BrightView offers MLAs in flexible film, semi rigid, and rigid forms, depending on the application. They can help to reduce weight by using less material, eliminating the need for bulky and heavy diffusers, which absorb much of the light generated. MLAs high hiding capability allows more compact and thin light modules having excellent reliability and excellent transmission to improve efficiency.

In addition to being practical, MLAs can provide a unique, aesthetic look in tail lamps, DRLs, ambient lights and illuminated logo lights. With different diffuser products and design options, car manufacturers can choose the best ones that match the vehicle’s interior and exterior design. This is an important factor in designs, as the lighting system is one of the most important elements when it comes to the look and feel.

Lighting is a major component in automotive, and the introduction of LED technology has significantly improved the efficiency and functionality of automotive lighting. However, controlling LED light is not easy, and it requires advanced technology to diffuse and shape the light to meet the desired requirements. BrightView’s MLAs are an excellent alternative to traditional diffusing agents, providing advanced light shaping and diffusing technology that can be used in a wide range of automotive applications. By using BVT’s MLA films, automotive manufacturers can create unique and innovative lighting solutions that enhance the overall design while reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainability.
