Improve the accuracy of your Driver Monitoring System (DMS) by 50%

 In ADAS, Blog

In 2019, India reported a total of 449,002 road accidents of which 151,113 were fatal. A study by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) found that 40% of highway accidents occur due to drivers dozing off. Driver Monitoring Systems can play a crucial role in reducing a significant number of road mishaps. Regulators all around the world are pushing for Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) to improve the road safety. Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 of the European Parliament and of the Council is likely to mandate driver drowsiness and attention warning (DDAW) systems for motor vehicles of categories M and N from 6 July 2022 for new types and from 7 July 2024 for all new vehicles. DDAW systems assess the driver’s alertness through vehicle systems analysis and, provide a warning to the driver as and when required. India has a track record of following EU regulations with a lag of a year or two. Since 2018, Minister of Road Transport and Highways of has also repeatedly shared the government’s plan to make ADAS features such as driver drowsiness detection, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, etc. mandatory in upcoming cars.

However, Driver Monitoring Systems are becoming more nuanced and complex due to increasing number of monitoring parameters and requirement for accurate detection of driver state. The automotive industry and stakeholders are facing several challenges in the development and validation of DMS. Though the complexity of the system is increasing, it is imperative to keep them affordable to encourage wider user adoption.

Phasya s.a. specializes in the software for monitoring physiological and cognitive states such as drowsiness, stress, and cognitive load, from the analysis of physiological data such as ocular data and heart rate. Integrating Phasya’ s software layer can significantly improve the performance of a DMS by reducing false positive and false negative rates by half. The next generations of DMS are expected to become more and more “multi-”, with multiple sensors, multiple features, and multiple applications. Phasya’ s software layer can support not only Ocular but Cardiac and other sensor inputs as well.

Using Phasya’s software might impart enhanced accuracy and scalability to your DMS. Click here to read more about Phasya’s Physiological & Cognitive States Monitoring Technology.
